At that time, the Buddha addressed the Elder Śāriputra: "From here to the west, past hundreds of thousands of koṭis of Buddha-lands, there is a world named Sukhāvatī. In that land there is a Buddha named Amitābha, who is currently teaching the Dharma. Śāriputra, why is that land named Sukhāvatī? The sentient beings of that land experience none of the multitudes of suffering, but receive only all kinds of bliss; therefore it is named Sukhāvatī.
