If you wish to seek the Buddha path, / Constantly follow those of much learning, / Regarding them as you would serve a good teacher; / Attaining Buddhahood will not be long. / If one keeps the precepts purely, / This is called a true monk. / If there is one who can contemplate emptiness, / This is called attaining samādhi. / If there is one who can be vigorous, / This is called a practitioner of the path. / If there is one who attains nirvāṇa, / This is called true joy. / A great śramaṇa who holds the precepts, / A pure nun of the great precepts, / Constantly performs poṣadha every half month, / Purifies themselves and practices begging for food, / With their body covered by the saṅghāṭī, / Robes and bowl accompanying their body as they go— / All the gods are filled with joy, / Reverently joining their palms in homage. / I will send the devas and humans / To act as their servants, / Just as the lesser gods / Serve Śakra Devānām Indra. / Today they obtain a present retribution, / And in the future it will be immeasurable. / Going forth and keeping the prohibitive precepts / Is called repaying the Buddha's kindness. / Furthermore, King Sudarśana, / Excepting myself and the bodhisattvas, / All people in the world / Who give rise to pure faith in their minds, / Fully understanding that the Buddhas of the ten directions / Are eternally abiding and do not enter nirvāṇa, / And that the Dharma and Saṅgha are also like this— / All such people / Are called repayers of the Buddha's kindness.
