時彼會中有菩薩，名曰自在，得虛空藏無盡法門，神智辯才應對無閡——此賢劫中十六聖子最大者是——遊十方剎施行佛事，即從坐起偏露右臂右膝著地，叉手合掌前白佛言：「今如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊，願欲聞說六趣眾生行業果報。所問微淺願時發遣。」

At that time in the assembly there was a bodhisattva named Zizai (Īśvara), who had attained the inexhaustible Dharma-gate of the Treasury of Space, with supernormal wisdom and unimpeded eloquence in responding—he was the foremost among the sixteen holy sons of this Bhadrakalpa—who roamed the lands of the ten directions carrying out Buddha-works. He immediately rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee upon the ground, joined his palms with fingers clasped, went forward, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "Now, may the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyācaraṇasampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇām, Buddha, Bhagavat, be willing to expound the karmic actions and retributions of sentient beings in the six destinies! What I ask is shallow and slight; may you kindly dispel [our doubts]."
