At that time, there was a bodhisattva in the assembly named Zao Xing (Maker of Practice), who immediately arose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee upon the ground, clasped his hands together in reverence, and came forward to say to the Buddha: "Excellent, Bhagavat! You have wonderfully spoken of the human lineage, which is neither before, nor after, nor in between the two. Through what may karmic deeds and retribution be known? Perhaps a past body is not the present one; perhaps a future body is not the past one; perhaps a present body is not the past or future one. Or perhaps deeds are performed internally and retribution is received externally; or deeds are performed externally and retribution is received internally. Or perhaps deeds are performed in the body of an ordinary person, and retribution is received in the body of a srotaāpanna; or deeds are performed in the body of a srotaāpanna, and retribution is received as a sakṛdāgāmin; or deeds are performed in the body of a sakṛdāgāmin, and retribution is received as an anāgāmin; or deeds are performed in the body of an anāgāmin, and retribution is received in the body of an arhat. Or there are sentient beings who attain the samādhi of loving-kindness without compassion, sympathetic joy, or equanimity; or there are sentient beings who attain compassion without loving-kindness, sympathetic joy, or equanimity; or there are sentient beings who attain sympathetic joy without loving-kindness, compassion, or equanimity; or there are sentient beings who attain equanimity without loving-kindness, compassion, or sympathetic joy. Or there are sentient beings who, from the stage of ordinary beings, without proceeding toward the stage of faith or the stage of Dharma, realize [the fruit of] a srotaāpanna; or there are sentient beings who, without proceeding toward the stage of faith, the stage of Dharma, or [the fruit of] a srotaāpanna, realize [the fruit of] a sakṛdāgāmin; or there are sentient beings who, without proceeding toward the stage of faith, the stage of Dharma, [the fruit of] a srotaāpanna, or [the fruit of] a sakṛdāgāmin, realize [the fruit of] an anāgāmin; or there are sentient beings who, without proceeding toward the stage of faith, the stage of Dharma, [the fruit of] a srotaāpanna, a sakṛdāgāmin, or an anāgāmin, realize [the fruit of] an arhat; or there are sentient beings who, without proceeding toward the stage of faith, the stage of Dharma, [the fruit of] a srotaāpanna, a sakṛdāgāmin, an anāgāmin, or an arhat, realize this or that arhatship. Or there are sentient beings who, having proceeded toward pratyekabuddhahood, fall back down to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who, having proceeded toward arhatship, fall back down to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who, having proceeded toward anāgāminship, fall back down to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who, having proceeded toward sakṛdāgāminship, fall back down to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who, having proceeded toward srotaāpannaship, fall back down to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who regress from the stage of Dharma and fall to the stage of ordinary beings; or there are sentient beings who regress from the stage of faith and fall to the stage of ordinary beings. All these sentient beings harbour doubts with respect to the Tathāgata. We only pray that the Bhagavat will distinguish each of these one by one, so that all those in the assembly may be brightly awakened."
