At one time, the Buddha was between the Twin Trees north of the city of Śākyavardhana in Kapilavastu, about to relinquish his bodily lifespan and enter nirvāṇa. At midnight on the eighth day of the second month, he personally folded three layers each of the saṃghāṭī, uttarāsaṅga, and antarvāsaka, spread them inside a golden coffin, and lay down on them with his body, his feet resting one upon the other. With his hands, he entrusted the bowl and monk's staff to Ānanda. The eight great kings each brought five hundred bolts of white fine cloth and sandalwood wood shavings, placing them all inside the golden coffin, wrapping the golden coffin with five hundred bolts of fine cloth, and moreover using five hundred carts laden with fragrant ghee and oil to pour over the white fine cloth. At that time, Mahābrahmā stood on the right side leading the hosts of Brahmā, Śakra Devānām Indra stood on the left side leading the gods of Trāyastriṃśa, and Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva together with the bodhisattvas of the ten directions possessing supernormal powers stood directly in front. At that time, the Bhagavat wished to enter the vajrasamādhi and shatter his body into śarīras: "Excellent! The inconceivable Dharma! Turning this true Dharma in the Sahā World." When the Bhagavat had made this thought, the worlds of the ten directions shook in six ways.
