At that time, the Bhagavat stretched his golden-colored arm out from the golden coffin and asked Ānanda: "Has the bhikṣu Kāśyapa arrived now or not?" [Ānanda] replied: "He has not yet arrived." The Bhagavat asked again: "Has the bhikṣu Gavāmpati arrived yet or not?" [Ānanda] replied: "He attained parinirvāṇa in that heaven; his three robes and bowl have arrived." The Buddha told the fourfold assembly: "I now take parinirvāṇa forever." He then gathered the fine cloth again, entered into the golden coffin, and remained silent without speaking. In this manner, he reached his hand out again and again for a brief moment. The Buddha asked Ānanda and the fourfold assembly (monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen), the eight great kings, gods, nāgas, ghosts, spirits, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, gandharvas, humans, and non-humans: "What do you think, Ānanda? Have you fully grasped all the vaipulya Mahāyāna sūtras of great practice that I have expounded from first to last, or not?"
