At that time, among the assembly was a bodhisattva named Samantaprabha—possessing great loving-kindness and great compassion, sovereign in miraculous feet, delighting in profound depths, accomplished in merits, who had for countless asaṃkhyeya kalpas rescued sentient beings, uprooted the roots of suffering, attained the six superknowledges, and wherever he passed through, buddha-activities were uninterrupted—who immediately rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee upon the ground, pressed his palms together, and stepped forward to address the Buddha, saying: "Having heard the Tathāgata distinguish the six superknowledges as unhindered and filling the buddha-worlds of the ten directions, assuming that the correct Dharma of all buddhas is equal and without distinction, does this dharma of consciousness now abide in having nowhere to abide? Regarding the conscious dharma of the six superknowledges, is consciousness a single dharma or manifold? If consciousness is a single dharma, when the Tathāgata's golden body roams the realms of all buddhas in the bodhimaṇḍa of miraculous feet, does consciousness cause the body, or does the body cause consciousness? If the body causes consciousness, then there are no six superknowledges; if consciousness causes the body, this is called a single dharma without body and without consciousness. We pray only that the Bhagavat explain this meaning to me."
