At that time, the Bhagavat showed a calm countenance and pleasant smile in the midst of the great assembly. By the constant law of all Buddhas and Tathāgatas, a Buddha does not smile vainly; a smile has its causes and conditions: if there are sentient beings who are to be born in the Brahmā Heaven, at that time the Buddha smiles; if there are those who are to become wheel-turning sage kings, the Buddha also smiles; if there are those who are to become hell wardens or King Yama, at that time the Buddha also smiles; if there are those who are to receive the body of a hungry ghost, the Buddha immediately smiles; if there are those who are to become kings of beasts, the Buddha also smiles. At that time, five-colored light emerged from the Bhagavat's face, universally illuminating the trichiliocosm, and then gathered back in, entering through the crown of his head. He then addressed Bodhisattva Zizai: "What you have asked has been received through the Tathāgata's spiritual power, and is also protected by all Buddhas of the ten directions, enabling you to bring forth this question. I shall now distinguish for you, one by one, the karmic causes and conditions of all sentient beings of the six destinies. Listen closely, listen closely! Bear it well in mind!"
