「弟子等！從無始以來至於今日所有報障，然其重者，第一唯有阿鼻地獄，如經所明，今當略說其相。此獄周匝有七重鐵城，復有七重鐵網覆其上下，有七重刀林無量猛火，縱廣八萬四千由旬。罪人之身遍滿其中，罪業因緣不相妨礙，上火徹下下火徹上，東西南北通徹交過，如魚在熬脂膏皆盡，此中罪苦亦復如是。

"We disciples! From anādikāla until today, among all our hindrances of retribution, the most severe is none other than the Avīci Hell. As clarified in the sūtras, its characteristics shall now be briefly explained. This hell is enclosed all around by seven tiers of iron walls, with seven tiers of iron nets covering above and below, seven tiers of knife forests, and measureless ferocious flames, measuring eighty-four thousand yojanas in length and breadth. The bodies of sinners completely fill it, yet their karmic conditions do not obstruct one another. Flames from above penetrate below, and flames from below penetrate above, thoroughly crossing through east, west, south, and north, just like fish in a frying pan whose fat and grease are completely burned away; the sinful suffering therein is also like this.
