"At the four gates of its city are four great copper hounds, their bodies four thousand yojanas in length and breadth, their teeth like sharp blades and eyes like flashes of lightning; there are also measureless iron-beaked birds, flapping their wings and soaring to devour the flesh of sinners. The ox-headed hell wardens have shapes like rākṣasas with nine tails, their tails like iron pitchforks; they also have eight heads with eighteen horns on each head; they have sixty-four eyes, from each of which burst forth iron pellets to burn the flesh of sinners; whenever they show wrath or anger and roar, their sound is like thunderbolts. / "There are also measureless natural knife wheels descending from the sky, entering from the sinners' crowns and exiting from their feet; thereupon the sinners' pain penetrates to their bone marrow, agonizing their livers and hearts. Passing through measureless years in this way, they seek life but cannot obtain it, and seek death but cannot obtain it. For such retributions, today we bow our heads in shame and repent.
