"Now, those who wish to make obeisance and perform kṣamā must first revere the triratna. Why is this? Because the triratna is the good friend and the field of merit for all sentient beings. If one can take refuge in it, one eliminates immeasurable sins and produces immeasurable merit, enabling practitioners to leave the suffering of birth and death and attain the bliss of liberation. Therefore, we disciples, so-and-so and the others, take refuge in all the Buddhas throughout the space of the ten directions; take refuge in all the exalted Dharmas throughout the space of the ten directions; take refuge in all the great Bodhisattvas throughout the space of the ten directions; and take refuge in all the sagely Saṅgha throughout the space of the ten directions.
