According to the section "Spurious and False Texts Confusing the True" in the *Kaiyuan Record*: "The single scripture above was popularly called in its time the *Buddha Names Sūtra of the Horse-Headed Rākṣasa*. It seems to have been compiled in recent times, taking the twelve-fascicle version translated by [Bodhi]ruci and collating and interweaving it. From it, after taking the titles of various sūtras, it took the names of pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and arhats to serve as the sequence of the Three Jewels, thirty-two items in all. Following the homage to the Three Jewels, there is in each case a kṣamā, beneath which it further cites the apocryphal scripture of the Horse-Headed Rākṣasa, placing it at the end. Thus vulgar, crude language was intermingled with sacred words.
