13.10

Having paid homage to the triratna, next again repent.

13.11

We disciples! Having already repented of the retributions of the three miserable realms and the like, should now further bow our heads in earnest and repent of the residual retributions among humans and devas. Having together received this life span in Jambudvīpa, though it is said to be one hundred years, few reach its full term; within that span, those cut down in the prime of youth are immeasurable in number. There is only the multitude of sufferings tormenting body and mind; grief, worry, fright, and dread are never absent for even a moment. All this is due to our roots of goodness being feeble and our evil karma abundant, causing whatever our minds undertake in the present to fail to accord with our wishes; one should know that all this is the residual retribution of evil karma accumulated from the past. Therefore, we disciples today take refuge in the Buddha with utmost sincerity.

13.13

Namas to all the triratna of the ten directions, exhausting the realm of space.

13.14

We disciples! From anādikāla until the present day, we repent of all the sinful retributions of the present and future, of the immeasurable residual retributions among humans and devas: of continuing misfortunes and past liabilities, severe infirmities and the hundred ailments, and incompletion of the six sense faculties. We repent of the sinful retributions among humans of being born in borderlands, wrong views, the three miserable realms, and the eight difficulties; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of frequent illnesses, emaciation, short life, and premature death; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of being unable to preserve and protect each other constantly among the six kinds of kin and family; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of relatives and friends perishing and the suffering of separation from loved ones; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of enemies gathering together, causing sorrow, worry, fear, and dread; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of water, fire, robbers, weapons, peril, terror, and fright; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of solitude, hardship, displacement, fleeing, and losing one's native land; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of imprisonment, confinement, solitary arrest, being forced to stand upright, whipping, and torture; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of public and private disputes, mutual ensnarement, and mutual slander; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of malignant diseases lasting years and months without curing, lying on mats unable to sit or rise; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of winter heat, summer epidemics, virulent pestilence, and typhoid; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of pernicious winds, swelling, and blockages; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of evil spirits seeking advantage to bring about disaster and hauntings; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of portents of bird cries, the hundred anomalies, flying corpses, and aberrant ghosts causing strange events; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of being harmed by tigers, leopards, jackals, wolves, and all manner of fierce beasts and fowl on water and land; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of hanging oneself, stabbing oneself, committing suicide, and harming oneself; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of grieving, despairing, strangling oneself, flying into rages, or indulging in erratic joy; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of throwing oneself into pits, plunging into fires, drowning, and jumping down. We repent of the sinful retributions among humans of lacking majesty and renown; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of clothing and livelihood failing to satisfy one's wishes; we repent of the sinful retributions among humans of encountering bad associates who cause obstacles whenever travelling, going out, coming in, or undertaking any affair. We repent of such immeasurable calamities, catastrophes, epidemics, perils, disasters, and afflictions among humans and devas in the present and future. We disciples today, with utmost sincerity, bare our hearts and lay open our minds before the Buddhas, the noble Dharma, and the assembly of sages of the ten directions, imploring their pity and repenting.

13.15

May we disciples, relying on the merit born of this kṣamā, wish that in life after life we will be endowed with complete physical marks, just like Rāhula, constantly meeting the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, and always hearing the wondrous Dharma; that our life spans will equal heaven and earth, untangled by the hundred illnesses; that the six kinds of kin and family will always be able to protect one another; that hostile thieves, blades, and weapons will be forever kept far away; that spontaneous garments will constantly fill our chests and boxes; that fragrant rice of a hundred flavours will constantly brim in our bowls; that prisons and confinement sites will transform into heavenly halls; that disputes and mutual fault-finding will turn into harmony; that lingering illnesses of consecutive years will leave our bodies and minds forever; that pestilence and all disasters will constantly depart from our thoughts; that monsters, spirits of mountains and waters, flying birds, tigers, leopards, jackals, wolves, and all perils on water and land will be utterly removed without remainder; and that sins such as self-mutilation, suicide, erratic anger, or erratic joy may, from now on until the attainment of buddhahood, be forever cast away.

13.16

May we disciples not suffer retribution in the evil paths; may we only give rise to great compassion to rescue and protect all sentient beings, causing them all to exhaust their nature and broadly transform all species so that all together ascend to right awakening."

13.17

Mahāyāna Scripture on the Lotus Baoda's Dialogue on the Karmic Retributions of Śramaṇas

13.18

A short while later, Baoda further entered the Fire-Arrow Hell. Why is it named the Fire-Arrow Hell? That hell is ninety yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed on all sides by iron walls, with fierce fire and blazing flames; the ground is entirely covered with iron pikes, and smoking fire blazes furiously to scorch the sinners. On its four sides, festering winds rise together, and in the void, a fierce wind abruptly rushes to blow against iron mountains. When the mountains grind against each other, they turn into fire-arrows; when the fire-arrows rub against each other, smoke and fire flare together; the shafts and feathers of the arrows are also on fire, and they come and shoot the sinners, entering through the head and coming out beneath the feet, entering through the back and coming out through the chest, piercing through from left to right, with fire burning and smoke and flames issuing from the wounds. The sinners cry out in agony beyond words, undergoing immeasurable retributions day and night, dying a thousand deaths and taking a thousand births, dying ten thousand deaths and taking ten thousand births.

13.19

Baoda asked, "What sins did these śramaṇas commit to receive this retribution?" The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, "These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not maintain them purely; they did not guard their deportment and acted like secular people, grasping bows and arrows with their hands, losing the deportment of the Buddha. As the scripture states: 'Long ago, there was the bhikṣu Sālī who did not guard his deportment, holding a secular person's bow and arrow with his hand, and suffered evil retribution for ten thousand lifetimes.' By this cause and condition, one should know that if a śramaṇa does not guard his deportment, he falls into the three evil paths; these bhikṣus here are also like this."

13.20

Having heard this, Baoda wept with grief and departed.
