The Buddha told the bhikṣu: "The Buddhas of the same name Śākyamuni who have entered parinirvāṇa in the past cannot be known by counting. Bhikṣu, I know those past Buddhas as clearly as if they were present before me. The mothers of those Buddhas were all named Mahāmāyā, their fathers were all named King Śuddhodana, their cities were all named Kapilavastu, their foremost śrāvaka disciples were all named Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, and their attendant disciples were all named Ānanda. How much more so for those of various different names—different names of mothers, different names of fathers, different names of cities, different names of disciples, and different names of attendants!
