“If a bhikṣu repents of the four grave offenses, he should do so day and night for forty-nine days, confessing the offenses committed before eight pure bhikṣus, confessing before them once every seven days. With the utmost sincerity and solemnity, he should repent of his past actions, with single-minded devotion take refuge in the Buddhas of the ten directions, reciting their names and paying homage to them according to his capacity and strength. If he is thus sincere for the full forty-nine days, his sins will surely be eradicated. When this person attains purity, signs will appear: whether awake or in a dream, he will see the Buddhas of the ten directions bestowing a prophecy upon him; or he will see a bodhisattva bestowing a prophecy upon him, leading him to the sanctuary as an accompaniment; or [the bodhisattva] will rub his crown, showing the sign of the eradication of sins; or he will see his own body entering a great assembly and seated among them; or he will see his own body preaching the Dharma within the assembly; or he will see various masters, pure-practicing śramaṇas, leading him to the sanctuary and showing him the Buddhas.
