At that time, the Buddha said to Śāriputra: “If a kulaputra or kuladuhitṛ seeks anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ, they must first repent of all sins. If a bhikṣu has committed the four grave offenses; a bhikṣuṇī has committed the eight grave offenses; a śikṣamāṇā, śrāmaṇera, or śrāmaṇerī has committed the fundamental offenses of the monastic life; or an upāsaka has committed the grave precepts of an upāsaka, or an upāsikā has committed the grave precepts of an upāsikā, and they wish to repent, they must bathe purely, put on fresh and clean clothes, and refrain from eating pungent roots. In a quiet place, they should prepare the interior of a room, adorn the sanctuary with banners and flowers, apply scented paste, hang forty-nine banners, adorn the Buddha seat, install a Buddha image, burn various kinds of incense—sandalwood, agallochum, olibanum, tagara, and sūtattha—and scatter various powdered incenses and paste incenses. Burning such various wonderful incenses and scattering various flowers, they should arouse great kindness and compassion, making a vow to save suffering sentient beings, causing the uncrossed to cross over, the unreleased to be released, the unpacified to be pacified, and those who have not attained nirvāṇa to attain nirvāṇa. Day and night they should reflect upon the Tathāgata’s original ascetic practices, enduring all kinds of afflictions throughout immeasurable kalpas without becoming weary, and for the sake of seeking supreme bodhi, they should spontaneously give rise to a humble mind toward all sentient beings, like the mind of a servant.
