The rākṣasa replied, "These śramaṇas received the Buddha's precepts but did not guard future [rebirths]. In name they claimed, 'I am a Dharma master of the Mahāyāna,' yet they were as dark night. Each claimed, 'I have attained the Buddha's Dharma and deeply comprehend the Buddha's meaning,' and then preached it to others. Leading disciples and guiding crowds, they wandered throughout the human world, or accepted the faithful offerings of kings, while inwardly their self-conceit was like mountains and oceans. Just like withered trees that retain only their bark while the core is rotten and useless, so too are these śramaṇas. Due to these causes and conditions, they fell into this hell; when they emerge from this hell, if born among humans, they will be deaf, blind, mute, and unable to hear the true Dharma."
