"We disciples! As spoken above, we have already performed kṣamā for all minor and major sins and all other evils committed against the triratna; now we should again perform kṣamā for them in order. In the sūtra the Buddha said: 'There are two kinds of strong persons: first, those who do not commit sins themselves; second, those who, having committed [sins], are able to repent.' It is also said: 'There are two kinds of pure dharmas that can eliminate and destroy all obstacles for sentient beings: the first is shame (hrī); the second is remorse (apatrāpya). Shame is not committing evil oneself; remorse is not causing others to commit it. One who possesses shame and remorse may be called a human being. If one lacks shame and remorse, one is no different from beasts. Shame is feeling blush before heaven; remorse is disclosing all committed sins to others.' Therefore, we disciples, today with utmost sincerity, shame, and remorse, take refuge in the Buddha."
