"Regarding the second, contemplating karmic retributions: all evil and unwholesome karma revolves through the three times, and its bitter fruits are inexhaustible, sinking into the vast ocean of endless long night, devoured by the rākṣasas of the kleśas. In future saṃsāra, darkness will be boundless. Even if one attains the retribution of becoming a wheel-turning sage king who rules the four continents, flies freely through the air, and possesses the seven treasures, after life ends one cannot avoid dying and falling into the evil destinies. The retributions of the four formless realms are the supreme height of the tridhātu, yet when one's merit is exhausted, one returns to become a maggot inside a cow's head; how much more so for all others who lack merit and virtue, and yet are negligent and do not diligently practice kṣamā? This too is like holding a rock and sinking into the abyss—seeking escape is truly difficult.
