The Origin of the Three Thousand Buddhas of the Three Kalpas (Extracted from the Sūtra on the Contemplation of the Two Bodhisattvas Bhaiṣajyarāja and Bhaiṣajyasamudgata)
1.2
Translated by Kālayaśas during the Song dynasty
1.3
At that time, Śākyamunibuddha addressed the great assembly, saying: “In the past, countless kalpas ago, during the declining dharma of Varaprabhabuddha, I renounced the household life and practised the path, and heard the names of these fifty-three buddhas. Having heard them, I made añjali and felt joy in my heart, and further taught them to others, causing them to hear and uphold them. Others, having heard them, taught them to one another in succession, up to three thousand people. These three thousand people, with different mouths but the same voice, recited the names of the buddhas and single-mindedly paid homage to them with reverence. By the power of the merit of such causal conditions of paying homage to the buddhas, they immediately were able to transcend the sins of saṃsāra of countless kotis of kalpas. The first thousand people, with Padmaprabhabuddha at their head down to Viśvabhūbuddha, succeeded in becoming buddhas in the Vyūhakalpa; these are the thousand buddhas of the past. The middle thousand people, with Krakucchandabuddha at their head down to Rocidharmaketurājabuddha, successively became buddhas in the Bhadrakalpa. The last thousand people, with Sūryaprabhabuddha at their head down to Sumerulakṣaṇabuddha, shall succeed in becoming buddhas in the Nakṣatrakalpa.”
1.4
The Buddha addressed Ratnakūṭa: “The present buddhas of the ten directions, such as Bhadraśrītathāgata, also formerly succeeded in hearing the names of these fifty-three buddhas, and therefore each became a buddha in the ten directions. If there are sentient beings who wish to eliminate the four pārājika offences, who wish to repent of the five unpardonable sins and the ten unwholesome courses of action, and who wish to eliminate the extremely grave sin of rootlessly slandering the Dharma, they should diligently pay homage to the names of the fifty-three buddhas:

If there are kulaputras or kuladuhitṛs who, hearing the names of these buddhas, the bhagavats of the three times and the three kalpas, joyfully believe and take delight in them, uphold, chant, read, and recite them without slandering them, or are able to write them down and speak them for others, or are able to paint or erect images of the buddhas, or are able to make offerings with incense, flowers, music, praise the buddhas’ guṇas, and pay homage with the utmost sincerity, this surpasses someone who fills the buddha-kṣetras of the ten directions with precious jewels and pure maṇi pearls, heaping them up to the Brahmaloka, and gives them as dāna for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. These kulaputras and kuladuhitṛs, having already made offerings to these buddhas, will in their future rebirths attend upon the buddhas successively, until they attain buddhahood without end; all of them will receive vyākaraṇa from the buddhas of the three times and three kalpas. Wherever they are born they will always encounter the triratna, obtain rebirth in the kṣetras of the buddhas, have all six sense faculties complete, not fall into the eight unfree states, and obtain the buddhas' thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, fully adorned. If they are able to perform prostration with the five limbs and declare with their own mouth: “I now pay universal homage to all the buddhas of the ten directions and the three times; may the three evil destinies come to rest; may the state be abundant and the people at peace; may sentient beings of wrong views turn towards the correct path and arouse bodhicitta; holding this merit, may I, together with all sentient beings of the six realms of rebirth, be born in the land of Amitāyus, make great vows, cause all sentient beings to be born in that kṣetra, with bodies having all the marks, and with wisdom and eloquence like Amitābhabuddha, and the karmic retribution obtained be lofty and magnificent, with immeasurable life.”

“I, your disciple, from beginningless time down to the present day, having had this mental consciousness, have constantly harboured malice and lacked compassion: either killing out of greed, or killing out of hatred, ignorance, or pride; or setting in motion evil expedients—killing by vow, killing by wish, or killing by curse; or breaching lakes and ponds, burning mountains and wildernesses, hunting and fishing; or setting fires using the wind, flying hawks and unleashing hounds, to slaughter all living beings. Transgressions such as these I now completely repent. Or with enclosures, traps, and pit-traps, with spears, bows, and crossbows, shooting at flying birds and wild beasts; or with drag-nets, casting-nets, and hooks, ensnaring water-dwellers such as fish, softshell turtles, giant turtles, alligators, freshwater crabs, small clams, snails, and mussels, and other moisture-born creatures, giving creatures of water, land, and sky nowhere to hide and flee. Or rearing chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, geese, and ducks to supply my own kitchen; or trading them to others to be slaughtered, so that their plaintive cries had not yet ceased before feathers were plucked, scales and shells ruined, head severed from body, bones and meat smashed and minced, stripped, cleaved, butchered, cut up, baked, roasted, boiled, and broiled, inflicting bitter, excruciating pain, arbitrarily abusing the innocent, all merely to procure a fleeting moment of pleasure. What enters the mouth as flavour is so very little, extending no further than three inches along the tongue's root; yet the karmic retribution for this crime brings suffering across eternal kalpas. Transgressions such as these I now, with utter sincerity, completely repent.
1.18
“Furthermore, from beginningless time down to the present day, I have raised armies to attack others, clashing in border disputes where two battle lines faced each other, slaughtering one another; or killed by myself, instructed others to kill, or rejoiced upon hearing of killing; or engaged in butchery and dressing meat, being hired to perform executions, boiling and slaughtering the lives of others, acting without compassion; or gave full vent to wrath, brandishing halberds and dancing with blades; or severed, stabbed, or pushed [beings] into pits and moats, or drowned them in water, or blocked burrows and destroyed nests, crushing [them] under mounds of earth and stones; or crushed and trampled all sentient beings with thunderous chariots and horses. Sins such as these are limitless and boundless; today I disclose and completely repent them all.
1.19
“Furthermore, from beginningless time, I have caused abortions and broken eggs, used poisons and black magic to harm and kill living beings, ploughed the soil and dug the earth, cultivated fields and gardens, raised silkworms and boiled cocoons, harming and killing exceedingly; or struck mosquitoes and gnats, squashed fleas and lice, or burned off refuse, unblocked trenches and gutters, wrongfully harming all [creatures]; or eating fruit, using grain and rice, water, or vegetables, arbitrarily killed living beings; or burning firewood, exposing lamps and candles, burned insect kinds; or eating fermented pastes and vinegar without checking for motion, or pouring out hot water, scalding and killing insects and ants; down to the four postures of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, constantly harming and killing subtle, tiny living beings flying in the sky or dwelling on the ground. I, your disciple, obscured by the ignorance of an ordinary person, acted unknowingly and unconsciously; today I disclose and completely repent all [these sins].
1.20
“Furthermore, I, your disciple, from beginningless time down to the present day, using whips, rods, cangues, and chains, stocks and presses, have tortured, flogged, struck, hurled down, kicked and trampled with hands and feet, tightly bound and caged, and cut off food and water—through such varied evil expedients afflicting sentient beings. Today, with utmost sincerity, before the buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the holy saṅgha, I completely repent.
1.21
“May we, your disciples, through the merit generated by this repentance of the sins of killing and harming, in lifetime after lifetime attain a vajra body with limitless lifespan, be forever freed from resentment and hatred, and have no thought of killing or harming. Toward all sentient beings, may we attain the stage of regarding them as an only child; if we see those in peril, disaster, emergency, or distress, may we not spare our own bodies or lives, but use skillful means to rescue and liberate them, causing them to attain deliverance, and thereafter preach the subtle, sublime true Dharma for them, so that all sentient beings, upon seeing our form or observing our shadow, will all receive peace and bliss, and upon hearing our name or listening to our voice, will have their terrors entirely dispelled. Each, make one prostration!
1.22
“I, your disciple, from beginningless time down to the present day, have stolen the wealth and jewels of others by brandishing blades and violently seizing them, or relied upon my own strength to extort and take them by intimidation, or relied on official authority, or assumed power and influence, using tall pillories and heavy fetters to falsely imprison the innocent, accepting corrupt bribes and twisting what was straight into what was crooked, and for these reasons becoming entangled in the net of the penal law. Or holding unrighteous office, I took possession of others' property, encroaching on the public to benefit the private, or encroaching on the private to benefit the public, harming that to benefit this, or harming this to benefit that, despoiling others to enrich myself, mouth professing generosity while the mind was stingy. Or secretly keeping tax revenues, evading customs duties, concealing official levies, and dodging corvée labour. Sins such as these I now completely repent. Or taking without permission what belongs to the Buddha, Dharma, or Saṅgha, or things belonging to sūtras and images, or things for repairing stūpas and monasteries, or things given to support the resident saṅgha, or intended for the saṅgha from the four quarters, or stealing them, misappropriating them, or relying on power not to return them; or borrowing them for oneself or loaning them to others, or failing to repay and forgetting them; or confounding and commingling the property of the Three Jewels; or using community property—grains, firewood, salt and fermented beans, pastes and vinegar, vegetables, fruit, money and silks, bamboo and timber, plain and figured silks, banners and canopies, incense, flowers, oil, and candles—according to one's own desires and whims, either using it for oneself or giving it to others, or plucking the Buddha's flowers and fruits, or using the garland items of the saṅgha, taking the wealth of the Three Jewels to privately enrich oneself. Having paid homage to the Triratna, next comes repentance.
1.34
"Having completed the repentance for the retributions of the hells, we should now next repent of the retributions of the three evil paths. In the sūtras the Buddha said: 'Because those of many desires seek much profit, their suffering and affliction are also great. Those who know contentment, though lying on the bare ground, still consider it joyful; those who do not know contentment, though abiding in heavenly palaces, are still not pleased.' Yet worldly people, when sudden danger strikes, can abandon their wealth without counting how much; and yet they do not realize that their very bodies are poised over the deep abyss of the three evil destinies, and that once a single breath does not return, they must immediately fall. When a good friend suddenly attends to merited virtue and bids them cultivate the provisions of future wholesome dharmas, they hold tightly to their stingy minds and find no reason to do so. Those who are like this are utterly foolish and deluded. Why is this? In the sūtras the Buddha said: 'At birth, one brings not a single coin; in death, one also takes not a single coin away. Accumulating [wealth] with a weary body brings only worry and affliction: to oneself it brings no benefit, and it merely passes to others. Having no wholesome deed to rely on, and no virtue to depend upon, it brings about that when life ends, one falls into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples bow our heads today and sincerely take refuge in the Buddha.
1.35
"Disciples, today we next repent of the retribution of offenses of having no understanding in the realm of animals. We repent of the retribution of offenses of bearing heavy burdens, drawing ploughs, and repaying former debts in the realm of animals. We repent of the retribution of offenses of having no independence, and being hacked, pierced, butchered, and cut apart by others in the realm of animals. We repent of the retribution of offenses of being animals that are legless, two-legged, four-legged, or many-legged. We repent of the retribution of offenses of having the inside of the hair, feathers, scales, and shells of one's body gnawed and devoured by tiny insects in the realm of animals. In such a way, there are immeasurable retributions for offenses in the realm of animals; today, with utmost sincerity, we repent of them all.
1.36
"Next we repent of the retribution of offenses of perpetual hunger in the realm of hungry ghosts. We repent of the retribution of offenses of hungry ghosts who for hundreds of thousands of myriad years never even hear the name of water or broth. We repent of the retribution of offenses of hungry ghosts who devour pus, blood, dung, and filth. We repent of the retribution of offenses of hungry ghosts whose limbs and joints all burst into flame whenever they move their bodies. We repent of the retribution of offenses of hungry ghosts who have large bellies and tiny throats. In such a way, there are immeasurable retributions of suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts; today we bow our heads and repent of them all.
1.37
"Next we repent of the retribution of offenses of flattery, deceit, and false pretense in the realm of all ghosts, spirits, and asuras. We repent of the retribution of offenses of carrying sand, hauling stones, filling rivers, and damming oceans in the realm of ghosts and spirits. We repent of the retribution of offenses of rākṣasas, kumbhāṇḍas, and all evil ghosts and spirits who devour raw flesh and blood and endure these hideous forms. In such a way, immeasurable and boundless retributions of all offenses in the realm of ghosts and spirits—today we bow our heads before the buddhas of the ten directions and the great earth bodhisattvas, beseeching mercy, repenting, and praying that they all be eradicated.
1.38
"May we disciples, by relying on the merit produced by repenting of the retributions of animals and the like, in life after life extinguish the defilement of foolish ignorance, recognise our own karmic conditions, illuminate with wisdom, and sever rebirth into bodies of the evil paths. May we, by the merit produced by repenting of the retributions of hungry ghosts and the like, in life after life be eternally separated from the suffering of stinginess, greed, and hunger, and always partake of the flavour of amṛta and liberation. May we, by the merit produced by repenting of the retributions of ghosts, spirits, asuras, and the like, in life after life be upright and free of flattery, depart from the causes of wrong livelihood, eliminate the fruits of ugliness, and bring blessings and benefit to humans and devas. May we disciples, from now until reaching the seat of awakening, definitely never receive the retributions of the four evil paths, except solely through great compassion for the sake of sentient beings, enduring them without weariness by the power of our vows. (Make one prostration.)"
