“I, your disciple, from beginningless time down to the present day, having had this mental consciousness, have constantly harboured malice and lacked compassion: either killing out of greed, or killing out of hatred, ignorance, or pride; or setting in motion evil expedients—killing by vow, killing by wish, or killing by curse; or breaching lakes and ponds, burning mountains and wildernesses, hunting and fishing; or setting fires using the wind, flying hawks and unleashing hounds, to slaughter all living beings. Transgressions such as these I now completely repent. Or with enclosures, traps, and pit-traps, with spears, bows, and crossbows, shooting at flying birds and wild beasts; or with drag-nets, casting-nets, and hooks, ensnaring water-dwellers such as fish, softshell turtles, giant turtles, alligators, freshwater crabs, small clams, snails, and mussels, and other moisture-born creatures, giving creatures of water, land, and sky nowhere to hide and flee. Or rearing chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, geese, and ducks to supply my own kitchen; or trading them to others to be slaughtered, so that their plaintive cries had not yet ceased before feathers were plucked, scales and shells ruined, head severed from body, bones and meat smashed and minced, stripped, cleaved, butchered, cut up, baked, roasted, boiled, and broiled, inflicting bitter, excruciating pain, arbitrarily abusing the innocent, all merely to procure a fleeting moment of pleasure. What enters the mouth as flavour is so very little, extending no further than three inches along the tongue's root; yet the karmic retribution for this crime brings suffering across eternal kalpas. Transgressions such as these I now, with utter sincerity, completely repent.
