When one enters nirvāṇa, everything is completely extinguished; it is not that the form realm, formless realm, or the beginning of the world (heretics regard the beginning of all existing dharmas, form, as the beginning of the world, which heretics call nirvāṇa; because of this having a beginning, it can transform and create the myriad things, which is termed 'Creation'), and such various false statements can extinguish this suffering. The eightfold [path] of right view and so forth is directly the path to nirvāṇa, not the austerities of other heretics, their various futile holding of precepts, futile dhyāna, and futile wisdom. Why? In the Buddhadharma, the three dharmas of precepts, samādhi, and wisdom practiced in unison enable one to enter nirvāṇa. For example, a person standing on level ground, holding a fine bow and arrow, can shoot and kill hostile bandits; the three dharmas practiced in unison are also like this! Precepts are the level ground, dhyāna is the swift bow, and wisdom is the sharp arrow. With these three things fully prepared, one can kill the bandits of kleśas. For this reason, the crowd of heretics does not attain nirvāṇa.
