"One removes and extinguishes the five hindrances and all kleśas. Although one previously attained stopping and contemplation, the mind was mixed with the impurities of kleśas; now, through this method of purification, the mind alone attains purity. Furthermore, the previous contemplation of different disciplines was a semblance of practicing the path by being mindful of the inhalation and exhalation of the breath; now, the wholesome tainted path resembles the untainted path, and this is called 'purification.' Furthermore, initially one contemplates a part of mindfulness of the body, and gradually all mindfulness of the body; next, one practices mindfulness of feeling and mindfulness of the mind; in these it is not yet purified because the untainted path is still far off. Now, within mindfulness of dharmas, contemplating the sixteen aspects while mindful of the inhalation and exhalation, one attains the stages of heat, peak, patience, and supreme mundane dharma, the acceptance of the dharma of suffering, up to the knowledge of exhaustion of an aśaikṣa; this is called 'purification.'"
