"At the very beginning, they see a black buddha resembling the foot of a black elephant; they see a person like ashes; they see bhikṣus with smashed heads and broken feet; they see bhikṣuṇīs adorned with flower garlands. They see heavenly elephants transform into monkeys, the tips of their hairs blazing with fire, coming to bother and disturb them. Or they see a wild fox and a jackal with hundreds of thousands of tails, the tip of each tail bearing immeasurable worms and all kinds of assorted evils. Or they see emaciated camels, donkeys, pigs, dogs, kumbhāṇḍas, and the like. Fierce yakṣas, rākṣasas, and executioners, each holding various weapons and evil fires, strike and beat the bhikṣu. Becoming deranged because of this—either singing, dancing, lying in excrement and filth, or committing all kinds of evils—one must cure them quickly.
