"The wise one should further instruct the practitioner to contemplate intently the top of the banner, seeing a clear crystal mirror atop it. Those bhikṣus who were arrogant because of their voices and whose minds were impure are transformed into rākṣasas emitting loud and dreadful cries, with fire issuing from their mouths. Furthermore, yakṣas arrive from the four quarters, pulling out their tongues and ripping out their hearts to place them atop the banner; their hearts tremble, crying out and shrieking like the roar of a drunken elephant, or in faint voices like the moaning of piśācas. Thereby he further hears all melodious sounds as though someone were calling out the names of his parents and heaping unprincipled abuse upon them; thereby he develops aversion, his ears taking no delight in hearing them, producing thoughts of revulsion. The wise one should then instruct him to contemplate the eight sufferings, as described in the contemplation of the eight sufferings."
