The paternal cousin of the King of Hexi, the upāsaka Great Juqu, Marquis of Anyang, [studied under] the Indian bhikṣu and Mahāyāna śramaṇa Buddhasena at the Vajra araṇya dwelling of the Gomatī Mahāvihāra in the kingdom of Khotan. That man was extraordinarily gifted, peerless throughout the kingdom, and could recite fifty thousand gāthās from memory; he was also thoroughly versed in the methods of dhyāna, widely learned in both Buddhist and non-Buddhist texts, and proficient in every scripture, so that the people of the world all called him 'the lion among men!' Juqu personally received instruction from him face-to-face, memorizing and reciting it without impediment. On the eighth day of the ninth month in the second year of the Xiaojian reign era, he wrote out this sūtra at the Bamboo Grove Monastery, finishing on the twenty-fifth day of that month.
