3.63

優婆塞眾中見佛世尊如黑象脚者，即從坐起偏袒右肩，合掌向佛，而作是言：「我生此國，我國王子出家成佛，阿私陀仙見三十二相，即為我說：『地天太子成佛無疑。』我聞是語歸依於佛，從是以來恒隨佛後，受三歸依、受持八齋、受五戒法。然我罪咎，但聞佛聲不見佛形，每見佛時如黑象脚，何酷之甚？」說是語已，舉手椎胸號泣躄地。

Among the assembly of upāsakas, those who saw the Buddha, the Bhagavat, as resembling the foot of a black elephant, arose from their seats, bared their right shoulders, joined their palms toward the Buddha, and said: "I was born in this country. The prince of our country went forth and became a Buddha. The immortal Asita saw the thirty-two primary marks and immediately said to me: 'The prince of earthly devas will become a Buddha without doubt.' When I heard these words, I took refuge in the Buddha. From then on, I have constantly followed behind the Buddha, received the three refuges, maintained the eightfold fasting precepts, and received the rules of the five precepts. Yet because of my guilt, I only hear the Buddha's voice and do not see the Buddha's form; every time I see the Buddha, he is like the foot of a black elephant—how exceedingly cruel is this?" Having spoken these words, they raised their hands, beat their chests, wailed, wept, and threw themselves to the ground.
