"The Buddha said to his father the king: "What is called the mark of the white curl at the time of ascetic practice? When I had leapt over the palace walls and was not far from the city of Gayā, I went to the aśvattha tree. The devaputra Śāntika and hundreds of thousands of other devaputras all thought: 'If the Bodhisattva is to sit here, he must have a seat; I should now offer heavenly grass.' Thereupon taking heavenly grass, pure and soft, named auspicious (kuśa), the Bodhisattva accepted it, spread it on the ground, and sat down. At that time the devas carefully observed the lovely marks of the Bodhisattva's body, and further saw the white hair, three inches in circumference, curling gracefully to the right with hundreds of thousands of colors flowing into his various marks. As these devaputras observed the white curl, each had this thought: 'The Bodhisattva has now accepted only my grass, not your grass.' At that time, within the white hair there were ten thousand million Bodhisattvas seated cross-legged, each taking his grass and sitting beneath this tree. Each and every devaputra saw such marks within the white curl. At that time the devaputra Śāntika praised him, saying: 'Excellent, supreme hero! You practice great compassion; through the power of compassion you have attained the marks of a great man. Within these marks are immeasurable transformations, capable of fulfilling all wholesome vows of the devas, causing no contention to arise, and giving rise to the bodhicitta.'"
