"When the devas of Śakra and Brahmā saw the Bodhisattva sitting beneath this tree, they each offered amṛta to make offerings to him. At that time, wishing to subdue the six non-Buddhist teachers, the Bodhisattva did not accept their offerings. The devas caused sesame and rice to grow naturally to his left and right, but the Bodhisattva did not eat. The devas all said: 'This good man has not eaten for many days; his energy is exhausted and little of his life remains. How will he be able to accomplish bodhi?' At that time the Bodhisattva entered the samādhi of the cessation of thought; the realm of this samādhi is called the pacification of the sense faculties. The devas wept, their tears falling like rain, and urged the Bodhisattva to rise and eat. When they made this entreaty, their voices resounded throughout the trichiliocosm, but the Bodhisattva was not aware of it.
