The Buddha told Ānanda: "For example, a wealthy elder had much wealth and abundant treasures, but only one son. The elder knew that his death was near and entrusted all his storehouses and treasuries to his son. After the son received them, he disported himself as he pleased. Suddenly, on one occasion, there was a disaster caused by the king: countless bandits arrived from all four directions and vied to seize the treasures from the storehouses, which he was unable to protect. There was only one piece of gold, which was purple gold from the Jambu River, weighing sixteen ounces, and the gold bar was also sixteen inches in length. A single ounce of this gold was worth hundreds of thousands of ounces of other treasures. Pressed by the bandits and having no other recourse with the gold, he wrapped the genuine gold in filthy rags and placed it in a lump of mud. When the bandits saw it, they did not recognize it as gold, trampled it with their feet, and left. After the bandits departed, the owner of the wealth retrieved the gold, and his heart was filled with great joy. The buddhānusmṛti-samādhi is also like this: one should keep it secretly hidden."
