The Buddha said to his father the king: "What is called the light of the mark of the Bodhisattva's white curl at the time of subduing Māra? Māra Pāpīyān observed Jambudvīpa from afar with his divine eye and saw the son of the Śākyas cast off his kingdom like spittle, sitting beneath the Tree of the Way with his flesh and bones withered and dry, his body emaciated like that of a chronically sick man; only his golden light became ever more radiant, his eyes sunken and dark like stars at the bottom of a well, his joints protruding against each other, losing their coiled-dragon lines. Pāpīyān rejoiced, saying: 'Gautama's body is emaciated and his bones are like rotting grass; though he has light and color, little of his life remains. While the Way is not yet accomplished, I should go and destroy him.' Blazing with wrath, he ordered the yakṣas to assemble the army swiftly: 'I now intend to descend to Jambudvīpa to campaign against Gautama.'"
