At that time, Māra had a son named Sātāra, who knelt long and said to his father: “When the prince of Śuddhodana was born, ten thousand gods attended him, and his light penetrated all the heavens. That man's loving-kindness and compassion broadly cover all beings. Now, for the sake of all living creatures, he sits beneath the Tree of the Path. Why, Father, do you conceive such evil and rebellious intentions?” Māra then said angrily: “You are young and ignorant, to claim that Gautama has superior virtue and the Path! Gautama's body is emaciated like a dry skeleton; what can he possibly do, that you speak of loving-kindness and compassion?” The son said again: “Gautama’s body is emaciated simply because he has not eaten. Looking upon his radiance and complexion, it is like a vajra mountain pouring forth purple flames. He has sat serenely for six years, his mind without wavering; looking upon his face, it has never worn an expression of fear. I beg of you, Great King, stay for now in your heavenly palace; do not wish to go and attack him.” Pāpīyān said again: “Just be silent! Why must you babble so?”
