The Buddha said to Ānanda: "Formerly, when I had just attained awakening, I stayed by the bank of the Nairañjanā River near the city of Gayā. There were five nirgranthas. The first nirgrantha was named Sajjāta, who had five hundred followers; the remaining four each had two hundred and fifty disciples. At that time, these nirgranthas claimed to have attained the Way and came to where I was. Wrapping their organs seven times around their bodies, they came to where I was, spread grass, sat down, and spoke these words: 'Gautama! Because I am free from desire, the mark of brahma-practice has been accomplished in me. My organ can do this, like that of Maheśvara. My spiritual powers now surpass those of the recluse by hundreds of thousands of times. If the recluse does one thing, I will do two.' Immediately, out of the earth he conjured a tree, wound his organ around the tree for a full seven turns, and caused clouds and mist to emerge from the tree like the breath of a dragon king. Raising his voice in a loud shout and holding up his hands, he proclaimed: 'Gautama! The mark of my brahma-practice is verified like this! You call yourself a man and say you are a great man—what proof do you have?'
