1.37

佛使目揵連請舍利弗。舍利弗言：「舉我帶，恐不能勝。」目揵連便牽帶，三千大千日月天地悉動，不能令帶起。舍利弗便生意，當先往到佛所，目揵連從後行，先舍利弗至。佛知二人各第一。

The Buddha sent Maudgalyāyana to invite Śāriputra. Śāriputra said: 'Try lifting my sash; I fear you cannot manage it.' Maudgalyāyana then pulled at the sash; the heavens and earth of the three-thousand great-thousandfold suns and moons all shook, yet he could not lift the sash. Śāriputra then formed the intention to arrive at the Buddha's place first; Maudgalyāyana followed behind, yet Śāriputra arrived before him. The Buddha knew that the two were each foremost."
