The son of the Buddha's paternal aunt, named Sunakkhatta, had attended the Buddha for eight years when he thought: 'He and I walk together as cousins, yet he alone is upright and has the thirty-two marks.' Unwholesome thoughts then arose in him. Walking behind the Buddha, he swept away the Buddha's footprints so that people would not see the Buddha's marks, and moreover told people that the Buddha had no Way, but merely spoke words that pleased people's minds. Śāriputra and Ānanda heard of this and became sorrowful and unhappy. The Buddha said: 'Sunakkhatta does not speak ill of me; he is actually praising the Buddha's virtues. If words hit people's minds, it is because people's minds have many afflictions.' The Buddha told Śāriputra: 'Sunakkhatta does not deliberate, but is merely angry. Why does he not deliberate? The Buddha has the thirty-two marks, radiance, and supernatural powers solely to subdue heterodox ways.' The Buddha repeatedly admonished Sunakkhatta, but [taking] true words to be heterodox sorcery, he was angry for this reason."
