1.46

佛有姑姊，年老手自作金縷織，成袈裟，持上佛。佛不受。如是復言：「佛當哀憐我故，當受之令我得福。」阿難白佛言：「可為我受之？」佛語阿難：「令持與諸比丘僧。我亦是比丘僧，不如與眾人，後世當為因緣。今世相見歡喜者，皆是前世親里善知識。何以故知之？相見意解故。」佛言：「世間人相待，但苦薄不苦厚。」

The Buddha had an aunt who was old; she wove a kāṣāya with golden thread with her own hands and offered it to the Buddha. The Buddha would not accept it. She said again: 'The Buddha should have pity on me and accept it so that I may gain merit.' Ānanda addressed the Buddha, saying: 'Could you accept it for my sake?' The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'Have her offer it to the bhikṣu-saṅgha. I am also part of the bhikṣu-saṅgha; it is better to give it to the assembly, which will serve as a cause in future lives. Those who rejoice when seeing one another in this life were all relatives and good friends in past lives. How is this known? Because upon seeing one another, their minds are relieved.' The Buddha said: 'When worldly people treat one another, they suffer only from neglect, not from generosity.'"
