The Buddha's disciples Aniruddha, Nandika, and Kimbila sat together and contemplated seven things on their own: 'First, having few desires leads to attaining the Way, while having many desires does not lead to attaining the Way; second, contentment leads to attaining the Way, while discontent does not lead to attaining the Way; third, vigor leads to attaining the Way, while lack of vigor does not lead to attaining the Way; fourth, guarding the six defilements so that they do not arise leads to attaining the Way, while failing to guard the six defilements and letting them arise does not lead to attaining the Way; fifth, guarding oneself leads to attaining the Way, while not guarding oneself does not lead to attaining the Way; sixth, guarding the mind leads to attaining the Way, while not guarding the mind does not lead to attaining the Way; seventh, wisdom leads to attaining the Way, while lack of wisdom does not lead to attaining the Way.' They contemplated these seven things together. At that time, they were sixty li away from the Buddha. The Buddha was sitting in meditation at that moment, immediately knew what the three were thinking, and shifted his presence to sit before the three, saying: 'Excellent! Excellent! I shall tell you another thing: not thinking of household desires leads to attaining the Way; thinking of household desires does not lead to attaining the Way.' Thereupon the three rejoiced and immediately attained bodhisattvahood.
