The Buddha told Ānanda: "What the human eye sees covers four hundred and twenty thousand yojanas. How is this known? The sun and moon are four hundred and twenty thousand yojanas away from the earth; human eyes can see the sun and moon, and by this it is known what the eyes can see. In the broad and distant regions of the ten directions, the suns and moons are hundreds of millions of times more numerous, like the sands in the great ocean, hundreds of millions of times beyond count. The good and bad, disasters and blessings created by human beings—that is, the disasters and blessings created earlier and later—are hundreds of millions and beyond reckoning. All good and bad essentially culminate when life ends: doing bad, one meets bad realms; doing good, one attains good realms. Disasters and blessings are all prepared in advance; their realms are all prepared in advance. If one's parents, brothers, wife, and children attain the Way, it ceases; if they do not attain the Way, it never ends."
