The Buddha said: 'In the past, someone went to challenge a monk, saying: "When a person dies, consciousness, thought, and perceptions are all extinguished. When one practices the Way and attains mental concentration, what is known is also extinguished. What difference is there?" The monk replied: "Both are extinguished; yet when a person dies and life ends, the spirit is not extinguished, but takes rebirth according to its actions. It is merely subtle and cannot be immediately seen. What they obtain is different: doing good leads to ascending to heaven, while doing evil leads to falling into the abyss. It is in this that they differ."'
