The Buddha said: 'There was a monk practicing the Way who attained the first dhyāna and said to himself: "I have attained stream-entry. The merit of the first dhyāna leads to rebirth in the seventh heaven with a lifespan of one kalpa." Attaining the second dhyāna, he reckoned himself to have attained sakṛdāgāmin. Through the merit of the third dhyāna, he would be reborn in the fifteenth heaven with a lifespan of eight kalpas. Attaining the fourth dhyāna, he reckoned to himself: "I have attained arhat. Why am I now not reborn in the nineteenth heaven with a lifespan of sixteen kalpas?" Having spoken thus, he then said: "The Buddha was merely speaking with a double tongue." Instantly falling from heaven into hell, without realizing the loss of his heavenly lifespan, he suffered punishment in hell. It is just like a person in the world who obtains rare treasures, and one day a fire breaks out and burns them all up; when a person gives rise to evil thoughts, they wrongfully burn up good thoughts. (In various editions, the text below sakṛdāgāmin lacks the passages on being born in heaven, lifespans in kalpas, and attaining the third dhyāna.)' The Buddha said: 'A person's good and evil follow one another without cessation; only upon attaining the Way does one leave the secular world.'
