"Kulaputra, the wondrous Dharma realized by that good friend should be free from four illnesses. What are the four illnesses? The first is the illness of contrivance. If someone speaks these words: 'I perform various practices in my original mind, wishing to seek perfect enlightenment'—because the nature of perfect enlightenment is not something obtained through contrivance, this is called an illness. The second is the illness of letting-be. If someone speaks these words: 'We now neither sever saṃsāra nor seek nirvāṇa; regarding nirvāṇa and saṃsāra, we have no thoughts of arising or ceasing; letting everything follow the nature of dharmas, we wish to seek perfect enlightenment'—because the nature of perfect enlightenment does not exist through letting-be, this is called an illness. The third is the illness of stopping. If someone speaks these words: 'My mind now permanently ceases all thoughts, attaining all natures in quietude and equality, wishing to seek perfect enlightenment'—because the nature of perfect enlightenment is not united through stopping, this is called an illness. The fourth is the illness of annihilation. If someone speaks these words: 'I now permanently sever all kleśas; body and mind are ultimately empty and non-existent, how much more so the false realms of faculties and dusts; everything being permanently quiescent, I wish to seek perfect enlightenment'—because the nature of perfect enlightenment is not the mark of quiescence, this is called an illness. One who is free from these four illnesses knows purity. One who makes this contemplation is said to have correct contemplation; if one makes any other contemplation, it is called false contemplation.
