"Kulaputra, if sentient beings—whether during the Buddha's presence in the world, after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, or in the time of the decline of the Dharma—possess the nature of the Mahāyāna, believe in the Buddha's secret mind of great perfect enlightenment, and wish to practice it: if they reside in a saṅghārāma along with an assembly, let them reflect and contemplate according to their capacity whenever circumstances arise, just as I have already explained. If, furthermore, they have no other engagements or conditions, they should establish a place of practice and set a time limit. If they set a long period, it is one hundred and twenty days; a medium period is one hundred days; a short period is eighty days; thus establishing a pure dwelling. If the Buddha is present, they should contemplate correctly. If after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, they should set up his image, keeping it in mind and visually contemplating it, generating correct mindfulness, just as in the days when the Tathāgata constantly abided. Hanging banners and flowers for three times seven days, they should bow down before the names of the Buddhas of the ten directions, entreating them with sorrow and repenting. When they encounter auspicious realms, they will attain mental lightness and peace. When the three times seven days have passed, they should focus exclusively on collecting their thoughts.
