"If it coincides with the beginning of summer, the three months of the retreat should be observed as the dwelling of pure bodhisattvas, their minds detached from the śrāvakas, not relying on a community. When the day of the retreat arrives, one should state before the Buddha: 'I, the bhikṣu, bhikṣuṇī, upāsaka, or upāsikā named so-and-so, mounting the Bodhisattva Vehicle, practice the cultivation of quiescence and enter together into the preservation of pure true reality. Taking great perfect enlightenment as my saṅghārāma, my body and mind dwell peacefully within the wisdom of equality; for the self-nature of nirvāṇa has no attachment or bondage. Now I respectfully request not to depend on the śrāvakas, and wish to dwell in retreat for three months with the Tathāgatas and great bodhisattvas of the ten directions. For the sake of cultivating the great cause and condition of the unsurpassed, wondrous enlightenment of the bodhisattvas, I am not bound to a community.' Kulaputra, this is called the bodhisattva's manifestation of the retreat. When the days of the three periods have passed, one may go wherever one wishes without hindrance. Kulaputra, if those practicing sentient beings in the latter age who seek the bodhisattva path enter the three periods, any realm that they have not heard of must ultimately not be accepted.
