"Kulaputra, what is the mark of a sentient being? It refers to that which falls beyond what the mind itself realizes and awakens to. Kulaputra, it is like a person who speaks these words: 'I am a sentient being.' One knows that this person, in speaking of a 'sentient being,' is neither 'me' nor 'another.' Why is it not 'me'? Since 'I am a sentient being,' it is not 'me.' Why is it not 'another'? Since 'I am a sentient being,' it is not another's self. Kulaputra, when sentient beings understand realization and understand awakening, these are entirely [the marks of] self and person; but when that which falls beyond the marks of self and person still retains a sense of being understood, it is called the mark of a sentient being.
