The Summary of the Great Ritual in one work of three fascicles was brought back by the three masters Jikaku, Chishō, and Sōei, though their manuscripts were not without differences. The one carved and printed now is Great Master Jikaku's exemplar. Over successive transmissions and copyings, errors and corruptions were quite numerous; hence, it has been collated and corrected against the root sūtra and the extensive manual. Where points remained undecided, annotations were placed above them to await future scholars. Or, to guard against disrespectful monks, where there were chaotic or omitted texts, marginal dots were added based on master-to-disciple lineage to indicate them. All of this is simply so that the Dharma jewel may long endure. Recorded in the summer of the sin-mao year, the first year of the Shōtoku era [1711], by the śramaṇa Eikō of the Ryōun Monastery in Bushū.
