Puṇṇatthero pana sattasatabhikkhuparivāro ‘tathāgatassa parinibbānaṭṭhānaṃ āgatāgataṃ mahājanaṃ assāsessāmī’ti kusinārāyaṃyeva aṭṭhāsi.
And having spoken thus, the Elder, surrounded by his retinue of five hundred, went to Rājagaha. Other elder monks as well, taking their respective retinues, set out in various directions, wishing to console the multitudes pierced by the dart of grief. Puṇṇa Thera, however, with a retinue of seven hundred monks, remained right there in Kusinārā, thinking: 'I will console the multitudes who come again and again to the place of the Tathāgata's final passing.'
