Venerable Ānanda, just as when the Blessed One had not yet attained final passing, so too now that he had attained final passing, taking the Blessed One's bowl and robe himself, set out on wandering toward Sāvatthī together with five hundred monks. But as he went along, the monks in his retinue went beyond count. Wherever that venerable one went, there was great weeping and wailing. When the Elder in due course arrived at Sāvatthī, the people residing in Sāvatthī heard, 'The Elder, it is said, has arrived!' and went out to meet him with perfumes, garlands, and the like in their hands, weeping and saying: 'Venerable Ānanda, formerly you used to come with the Blessed One; today, leaving the Blessed One behind, where have you come from?' and so forth. There was great weeping and wailing, just like on the day of the Buddha's, the Blessed One's, final passing.
