Vinayaṃ saṅgāyitvā dhammaṃ saṅgāyitukāmo āyasmā mahākassapo bhikkhū pucchi – ‘‘dhammaṃ saṅgāyante hi kaṃ puggalaṃ dhuraṃ katvā dhammo saṅgāyitabbo’’ti? Bhikkhū – ‘‘ānandattheraṃ dhuraṃ katvā’’ti āhaṃsu.

Having chanted the Vinaya, the Venerable Mahākassapa, wishing to chant the Dhamma, asked the monks: ‘Now, while we chant the Dhamma, who should be placed in charge and the Dhamma chanted?’ The monks said: ‘Placing the Elder Ānanda in charge.’
