Āvaraṇātiādīsu āvarantīti āvaraṇā. Nivārentīti nīvaraṇā. Onandhantīti onāhanā. Pariyonandhantīti pariyonāhanā. Kāmacchandādīnaṃ vitthārakathā visuddhimaggato gahetabbā.

In "hindrances" (āvaraṇā) and so on: they are 'hindrances' because they hinder. They are 'obstructions' (nīvaraṇā) because they obstruct. They are 'entanglements' (onāhanā) because they bind down. They are 'enshroudings' (pariyonāhanā) because they wrap all around. The detailed explanation of sensual desire and the rest should be taken from the Visuddhimagga.
