"Thus have I heard... in the Kareri cottage": this is the Mahāpadāna Sutta. In that passage, this is the commentary on the words that are new: In "in the Kareri cottage," "karerī" is the name of the varuṇa tree; a karerī bower stood at the door of that cottage, therefore it is called "Kareri cottage," just as it is called "Kosamba cottage" because of standing at the door of a kosamba tree. Inside the Jeta Grove, it is said, there were four great buildings: the Kareri Cottage, the Kosamba Cottage, the Perfumed Cottage, and the Salaḷa Cottage, each constructed at an expense of one hundred thousand. Among them, the Salaḷa Cottage was built by King Pasenadi; the rest were built by Anāthapiṇḍika. Thus the Blessed One was dwelling in the Kareri cottage, resembling a celestial mansion, which had been built on pillars by the householder Anāthapiṇḍika. "After the meal": for those who eat in a single session and refuse subsequent food, having eaten early in the morning, even within midday it is "after the meal." But here "after the meal" is intended as after the ordinary meal. "Returned from the almsround": returned from collecting almsfood; the meaning is: having finished their meal-duties and risen up.
